About Molly

Molly
I am Molly Secrest, MA, CCC/Sp, a speech pathologist* who focuses on aphasia.

I work with people along a continuum:  from those who can’t say “ahh” (yet!) – to those whose aphasia is not apparent in casual conversation.  I work with people mere hours after stroke – to more than a decade after stroke.  I help people to speak, to read, to draw, to listen, to sing, to point — to participate more fully in human interaction.

*speech therapist, speech-language pathologist, communication specialist, aphasiologist, certified clinician — take your pick!

EDUCATION AND EARLY CAREER

I graduated from Kirkland and Hamilton Colleges in Clinton, New York in 1979.  Along the way I studied at the University of North Carolina and the Sorbonne in Paris.  I liked linguistics best.  I continued studies in speech and language at Portland State University in Oregon, finishing a master’s degree in fall of 1982.  Aphasia and related disorders was always my favorite area.

I received the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in 1983.  The Clinical Fellowship Year began at the VA in Portland, Oregon and ended at Easter Seals in Burlingame, California.

WHERE HAVEN’T I WORKED??

I have worked with patients, clients and families in their homes, in out-patient clinics, at worksites, in public places, in hospitals, rehab hospitals, long-term hospitals, subacute facilities and nursing homes.  I have worked in Oregon, California, Massachusetts, Texas, Rhode Island and again in Massachusetts.  I have established and headed up departments of Speech Pathology, supervised grad students and mentored Clinical Fellows.

PRIVATE PRACTICE and WESTBOROUGH APHASIA GROUP

My speech therapy private practice opened in 2000, and is centered in Westborough, Mass. I also lead an aphasia group for support and practice. For more information on this group, click on the Evaluation and Treatment tab, and scroll to the bottom.

ADVENTURES IN INTENSIVE TREATMENT

From May through August 2009 I was guest clinician at InteRACT, a residential intensive aphasia treatment program.  It is university affiliated and located in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  My area of responsibility was “Speech and Language.”  I also helped supervise graduate students.  It is an honor to have collaborated with such an effective program.
